At Rite Aid, we're committed to offering lower-priced prescription drugs like Crestor at no extra charge.
The cost of prescription drugs in the United States could be as low as $10 for a 30-day supply, according to a recent research report.
The cost of Crestor, the active ingredient in Lipitor, is significantly lower than the cost of Lipitor’s brand-name version, Crestor XR.
The report states that this could be a significant cost savings. For example, at Rite Aid, the cost of Crestor could be as low as $2 for a 30-day supply.
“This is the first time that an actual drug retail price has been determined,” said, a professor at the University of Florida College of Pharmacy. “It’s just not true. We don’t know what the actual price will be, and we’re not able to make any firm conclusions about it at this time.”
The cost of Crestor is based on its chemical name, rosuvastatin calcium, which is the same as Crestor XR in the US market. Crestor is the generic name for Crestor XR.
“It’s a much more expensive version of rosuvastatin,” said Dr. David H. Rosenbloom, an endocrinologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Deaconess. “It’s the same active ingredient, but with more variability.”
The report notes that the generic version of Crestor costs $20 to $30 per 30-day supply, compared with $10 for the brand-name version.
A recent study showed that the cost of Crestor, the active ingredient in Lipitor, is $25 to $30 a month. In this study, the price of Crestor at Rite Aid’s pharmacy was about $15 per 30-day supply.
CVS Pharmacy has sold the brand name version of Crestor in the US for more than $5.4 million in 2016. At the time, the cost of Crestor is about $3 per 30-day supply.
Rite Aid’s price of Crestor is significantly higher than that of Lipitor, a brand-name version of Crestor.
“We’re not saying this is a good idea,” said Dr. Peter B. Leucht, a professor of pharmacy at the University of Southern California School of Pharmacy. “But it’s not a good idea to pay the cost of a brand-name drug. It’s more like $10 for the generic version.”
“The cost of a drug at Rite Aid could be as high as $150 per 30-day supply,” said B. S. Pharm. director Robert S. Bremner, a professor of pharmacy at the University of Southern California School of Pharmacy. “That’s a lot of money, and it’s not like we can charge more.”
Rite Aid’s price of Crestor is about $15 per 30-day supply, compared with $10 for the brand-name version. At Rite Aid, the cost of Crestor is as high as $20 to $30 per 30-day supply. Rite Aid charges $10 for the generic version.
The cost of Crestor could be as low as $10 a month, in addition to other costs, including shipping. For example, at Walgreens, Wal-Mart and Rite Aid charges $20 to $30 a month.
“CVS is a great place to buy a drug,” said Bremner.
CVS has no plans to sell the brand version of Crestor. Rite Aid said it will only sell the generic version, but it will have the same price.
